"The problems had really started when we were defeated in Adelaide to go 2-0 down. I was in a bit of a muddle and didn't really know how to get out of it.

"My head had gone, probably with what had happened in the Ashes. The frustration was bubbling inside of me. I exploded.

"My bat was leaning against the bench in the dressing room, and I put my foot through it and broke it - not the most intelligent thing to do.

"The upshot was I turned up for nets the next day not in the best of shape, although I wouldn't say I was as bad as coach Duncan Fletcher has said I was.

"I'm not going to try to make excuses because I know I shouldn't have arrived for training smelling of booze. It was unprofessional but it was indicative of my state of mind at the time.

"I wasn't the only one, I hasten to add, and it wasn't just the players - most of the support staff were at it more than we were. It was like being on a booze cruise."

Flintoff also gave details of the infamous "pedalo incident" during England's less than impressive 2007 World Cup campaign in the West Indies, but said he did not, as reports at the time claimed, need to be rescued.

The all rounder was stripped of his vice-captaincy in the wake of the incident which followed a late-night drinking binge.

"Not long after I arrived at the club, I realised I'd had enough to drink and slipped out - intending to walk back to the hotel," he explains.

"Instead of walking down the road, I decided it would be nicer down the beach and come into the hotel from the back. A row of kayaks caught my eye, but none of them had any oars.

"Next to them were some pedalos, and I remember dragging one to the edge of the water - presumably because I fancied a ride. But for the life of me, I couldn't work out how to get on it - or my legs into it - so I let go of it, and it quickly drifted away from the shore.

"I think I slipped and fell over in a few inches of water, but nothing more."

Flintoff played a pivotal role in England's Ashes victory under Duncan Fletcher in 2005 but said they struggled to develop a working relationship when he was captain.

Cracking

The One-day ranking too is expected to change hands and South Africans are hoping to get over the ICC Awards snub by drumming up the 'cut-throat' nature of the competition. On the face of it, the hosts, along with India and Australia, are ahead of the pack judging by recent run of form and win-loss ratio in South Africa.

But the more adventurous but wildly exuberant Pakistanis and the wily and well-rounded Lankans too are eyeing the kill, hopefully making for a fortnight of swinging fortunes and memorable highs.

What will be interesting to see, though, is whether captains, enthused by the freshness and bounce in the pitches, break the mould by thinking out of the box in the much-maligned middle overs, from the 15th to the 40th.

Any early break in set patterns will set off the spark that could light up this event, even in spite of the disappointment of having to see the West Indies field a second-string team.

Spinners call shot

With England having scrapped the 50-over format from its domestic calendar and a largely predictable pattern - coupled with the sheer deluge of meaningless tournaments all blurring into one another - having facilitated the public fascination with Twenty20, these are testing times for One-day Internationals.

'There can only be one winner', scream the adverts across Johannesburg. But a flurry of exciting contests to serve as a reminder of One-day cricket's varying nuances will be the best medicine for the ICC, which is struggling to secure the long-term future of the format.

Much depends, though, on what sort of match-ups the key teams serve up. South Africa skipper Graeme Smith hit the nail on the head when he said, "The ICC have put a lot of effort into this tournament. You can feel it, but ultimately, it's how cricket is played that is going to define if the tournament is a success. The good point is that it is short and to the point, and hopefully it can capture the imagination."

Ground realities offer hope. Day-night cricket isn't usually played in South Africa at this time of year and the juice and bounce in the pitches will keep even the home team guessing.

Dilshan all the way

Dilshan hit 16 fours and one six to score 106 off 92 balls, while Kumar Sangakkara (54), Jayawardene (77) and Thilan Samaraweera (37) chipped in with useful contributions after Graeme Smith won the toss and inserted Sri Lanka.

But pacer Dale Steyn spoiled the party, trapping Jayasuriya in front of the wicket as Sri Lanka were reduced to 16/1 in 2.2 overs.

Dilshan kept attacking the bowlers and along with skipper Sangakkara forged a 158-run stand for the first wicket before the latter was sent packing by JP Duminy in the 28th over.

Six balls later, Steyn had Dilshan caught at third man by Albie Morkel as his second wicket to reduce Sri Lanka to 181/2 in 29.1 overs.

Jayawardene and Samaraweera then joined hands and helped the side surpass the 200 mark in 34 overs and then exploded in the end to swell the total as Sri Lanka cross the 300-mark hurdle in the 47th over.

Sl win

For Sri Lanka, Tillakaratne Dilshan's third ODI century of 106 included 16 boundaries -- including his trademark scoop over the wicketkeeper off Dale Steyn, one of the premier fast bowlers in the world -- and one six in 92 balls.

After Steyn trapped Sanath Jayasuriya lbw for 10 with the total on 16, Dilshan and captain Kumar Sangakkara shared a 158-run partnership. Sangakkara was caught and bowled for 54 by part-time spinner Duminy at 174/2 in the 28th over.

Dilshan was out to Steyn a few balls later, caught at third man after cutting a short delivery outside off stump.

But Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera restored Sri Lanka's momentum with a partnership of 116 for the fourth wicket.

Jayawardene fell for 77 off the bowling of Wayne Parnell. On the next delivery, Samaraweera edged Parnell to third man to be dismissed for 37 off 47 balls.

The rest of the innings tailed off as three wickets fell in the final seven balls.

The South African bowlers battled, with Steyn's 3/47 the best return. Parnell also took three wickets but they cost 79 runs. Roelof van der Merwe was the most economical, his spinners going for 42 runs in 10 overs.

Smith scored freely for his 58 off 44 balls, but his first sight of Mendis saw him miss the leg spinner and lose his leg stump.

Kallis looked impressive for his 41, but he got anxious as Mendis tied him down and he holed out to a good catch at mid-off by Angelo Mathews. Duminy chopped the next delivery on and was gone for a duck.

At the end, Albie Morkel was there on 29, giving South Africa the faintest of unrealistic hopes.

Confusion

For now, neither Isro nor Nasa is speaking about the discovery.
